In this post we talk to Susan, a ZOE pilot user, about her experience.
I've tried different programs and diet advice, but every single effort has always led to that famous yo-yo effect where I found myself at a higher weight than when I first started. There is nothing more discouraging than that! My experience with ZOE has helped me find confidence in eating and has empowered me to choose the right foods for my body.
My relationship with food before ZOE could be described as ‘inconsistent’. Sometimes I’d put in a lot of effort into eating healthy, and sometimes I wouldn't. I have lost weight in the past but have never been able to sustain it.
I came to consider myself as a sugar addict and struggled to get my cravings under control. This often left me feeling hopeless.
'Eating right’ has always just felt too restrictive, too complicated, too overwhelming, and too inconvenient. I was definitely on the downward spiral of deciding not to care anymore. I was just plain tired of trying.
I decided to take part in ZOE’s PREDICT-2 study because it sounded like the research team was looking for answers to the same questions I’ve struggled with throughout my life, like:
A few months after finishing PREDICT-2, I received a call from the nutritionists at ZOE who were ready to share my test results. The timing was pretty ironic. I was at my highest weight ever and had just stocked my freezer full of convenience foods.
ZOE’s plan has helped me change the way I think about nutrition and the way my body uses food, rather than focusing on weight loss goals alone.
Other plans promise quick fixes, rapid weight loss, and go so far as to promote themselves as the last diet you will ever need. ZOE never claimed that this would be the last diet I would ever need. Instead, I was presented with facts like, “When you eat this food, this is how your body handles it. You deserve to know how your body works.”
When I started the action plan, it was remarkably easy! There’s no counting calories or grams of anything. No guilt trips - just encouragement.
I am learning to tune into what is best for my body and find myself thinking, “What do I want? How much do I want it? How can I make it work for me?” Sometimes I find that I don’t actually want to eat foods that I previously craved.
I feel like the ZOE plan has given me the tools I need to finally be the one in control of food, instead of the food controlling me!
I think the ZOE plan will last me a lifetime because when I get to my ideal weight, I don't think I'll be arriving there feeling deprived like other times. I am no longer thinking of any number on the scale as a finish line either. I plan on fueling my body right for my whole life now, and the ZOE plan really supports that.
I've already lost about 15 pounds! I can feel satisfied eating just 2 cookies instead of the whole tray now too. That actually makes me feel the way I always imagined a "normal" person must feel like!
My ZOE plan taught me how to make my food work for me, finally. That makes all the difference!
I think a big ‘aha!’ moment was realizing that many of the foods that I’ve always been told are healthy were actually causing blood sugar spikes and crashes for me. Things like whole wheat pasta and brown rice are definitely not the best choices for my body.
ZOE taught me how to swap these out for alternatives like lentil pastas and bulgur, so I don’t need to give up carbs entirely! I actually think my new choices taste a lot better. I had never even tried them before!
Satisfying. I feel satisfied physically, but I am finding that I feel very satisfied mentally and emotionally too. Another word I might use to sum it all up is “FINALLY!”
